Players eager to dive into a strange and unsettling sci-fi adventure can now experience RetroSpace ahead of launch, as publisher Kwalee and developer The Wild Gentlemen
have released a new demo for the upcoming immersive sim on Steam.
The latest demo introduces players to a new medical sector aboard the mysterious Aurora 5 space station while showcasing one of the game’s most intriguing mechanics: space-time jumps that alter the way players explore and interact with the world. As they navigate the station, players will uncover secrets, face bizarre threats, and tackle objectives using a variety of approaches.

RetroSpace blends immersive sim gameplay with sci-fi horror and retro-futuristic style. Set aboard a space station swallowed by a sentient black hole, players take on the role of an ordinary janitor who suddenly finds themselves humanity’s last hope. The station has become home to strange plant and animal hybrids, warped realities, and dangerous anomalies that challenge both survival skills and sanity.

A major focus of the game is player choice. Encounters can be approached through stealth, environmental manipulation, creative problem-solving, or direct combat. Security systems can be hacked or turned against enemies, traps can be set, and hidden routes can provide alternatives to dangerous confrontations. Whether players prefer sneaking through the shadows or charging headfirst into chaos, RetroSpace supports multiple playstyles.

Aurora 5 itself is designed as a sprawling interconnected environment inspired by Metroidvania-style exploration. As players progress, they will unlock shortcuts, discover hidden areas, and gain access to new paths that connect previously explored sections of the station. A central hub area offers a temporary refuge from the horrors lurking throughout the facility.

One of RetroSpace’s most distinctive systems revolves around Mutamods™, mutations that grant powerful abilities affecting stealth, combat, and exploration. These enhancements can transform players into increasingly bizarre versions of themselves, though the benefits come with potential side effects that may permanently alter future runs.

Death is also woven directly into the gameplay experience. Rather than ending the adventure, players are cloned and sent back into the station. However, repeated cloning comes with degeneration effects, creating new challenges while encouraging players to recover gear and resources left behind by previous versions of themselves.

Featuring low-poly visuals inspired by classic immersive sims, a retro-futuristic aesthetic influenced by the 1960s and 1970s, and a narrative mixing dark humor with sci-fi horror, RetroSpace aims to deliver a unique blend of exploration, survival, and player-driven problem-solving.
The RetroSpace demo is available now on Steam.
