The twisted dreamscapes of NeverAwake are opening back up—and this time, they’re procedurally generated. Developer Neotro Inc. and publisher Phoenixx have officially unveiled NeverAwake FLASHBACK, a full-fledged sequel to the cult-favorite nightmare shoot-em-up. Launching on PC via Steam in Fall 2025, this new chapter dives even deeper into the surreal, anxiety-fueled world of Rem’s subconscious.
A Dream You Can’t Wake From
After the events of NeverAwake, Rem finally found a moment of peace. But nightmares have a nasty habit of coming back stronger. Armed with her trusty plush companion Gabe-chan, Rem must once again plunge into the chaos of her mind and battle bizarre personifications of childhood fears. The broccoli is back, and it’s angrier than ever.
Unlike the original’s handcrafted levels, NeverAwake FLASHBACK leans into procedural generation, offering 50 twisted stages shuffled in random order every run. Think twin-stick bullet hell meets bite-sized roguelite, where no nightmare is ever the same twice.
Gameplay Breakdown: Fast, Fluid, and Freaky
- Custom Loadouts – Mix and match three weapons and three accessories before each run to suit your playstyle and dominate soul-sucking dream fiends.
- Gabe-chan Returns – Your cute-yet-deadly plushie partner is no mere sidekick. Gabe-chan brings powerful support skills into battle, helping you turn the tide against even the nastiest of subconscious horrors.
- Procedurally-Generated Chaos – Fight your way through an unpredictable sequence of nightmare arenas packed with new hazards, enemy variants, and bosses. You can even save and share stage seeds for your favorite runs.
- Pick-up-and-Play Meets Hardcore – Whether you’re a returning NeverAwake veteran or new to Rem’s dreamworld, FLASHBACK offers a smooth, satisfying on-ramp into twin-stick roguelite action.
A World That Grows With You
In response to player feedback, Neotro and Phoenixx are upping the ante on replayability, with randomized content, layered upgrades, and even fan-favorite throwbacks from the original. If you loved the unsettling atmosphere and emotional undertones of NeverAwake, FLASHBACK will feel like a fresh dose of dream-fueled nostalgia—with way more chaos.
NeverAwake FLASHBACK will support English, Japanese, Traditional and Simplified Chinese at launch, with more platforms possibly to follow.
