Saber Interactive is taking its hit zombie franchise into new territory—virtual reality. World War Z VR, a brand-new single-player FPS built from the ground up for immersive play, officially launches August 12, 2025, on Meta Quest and SteamVR. And yes, the horde is back—only this time, they’re in your face.

Based on the World War Z film and Saber’s co-op shooter that’s drawn in more than 25 million players worldwide, this VR reimagining plunges you straight into the chaos. With up to 200 zombies on screen at once, Saber promises a technical and sensory onslaught designed to push the limits of standalone VR hardware. If you thought fighting off a zombie swarm was intense in third-person, try doing it with them breathing down your neck in VR.

Built for VR from the Ground Up

Unlike many VR ports, World War Z VR isn’t just the same game with a new perspective. Saber has overhauled mechanics, pacing, and controls to maximize immersion while staying true to the fast-paced, horde-blasting action the franchise is known for. Expect a pulse-pounding solo experience that plays more like a cinematic rollercoaster than a casual walk through the apocalypse.

You’ll battle your way through three large-scale environments—New York, Tokyo, and Marseille—each teeming with swarming undead. Choose from seven playable operatives, each with customizable weapons and perks. Pre-mission loadouts and AI companions give you options for strategy, while adaptable enemy AI and difficulty modes crank up the replay value.

    • Explore Iconic Locations: Travel to three real-world cities, now totally overrun: New York, Tokyo, and Marseille.

    • Choose Your Survivor: Pick from 7 characters and load out with your preferred gear, perks, and challenge level.

    • Zombies That Fight Smart: Special infected enemies and adaptive AI force you to stay sharp every step of the way.

    • Replayability Built-In: With multiple difficulties and loadout combinations, each mission is a new test of survival.
