Dive into Terror: DEEPEST FEAR™ Brings Survival Horror Beneath the Waves

Unveiled at the PC Gaming Show, DEEPEST FEAR™ by Variable State delivers a gripping first-person survival horror experience set in the eerie, decaying depths of an underwater facility. This sci-fi horror shooter takes fear to a whole new level, where water itself becomes a living nightmare. Utilizing cutting-edge real-time fluid simulation, terrifying entities can emerge from any water source, creating a dynamic and unpredictable environment that keeps players on edge.

A Descent into the Unknown
In DEEPEST FEAR™, players step into the role of Dr. Danni Carroll, a scientist trapped in the Neptune facility—an isolated, retro-futuristic underwater labyrinth riddled with dark secrets and hidden truths. Far from the surface and cut off from rescue, Danni must battle relentless aquatic horrors that spawn from water sources, all while navigating a failing infrastructure and constantly shifting, submerged surroundings.

Armed with ingenuity and a range of tools, players will unravel the mysteries behind Neptune’s sinister purpose—a project tied to Danni’s estranged father. Survival hinges on problem-solving, exploration, and adaptability as the claustrophobic halls of Neptune become both a puzzle and a battleground.

Innovative Horror Mechanics
DEEPEST FEAR™ blends genres to push survival horror into uncharted waters. Borrowing from Immersive Sim and Metroidvania elements, the game challenges players with environmental puzzles, real-time fluid dynamics, and strategic survival mechanics. Every flooded corridor and leaking pipe becomes a potential threat as water manifests the horrors lurking beneath the surface.

Inspired by cinematic classics like The Abyss and The Thing, DEEPEST FEAR™ creates an atmospheric and visually striking experience where players must balance exploration with survival in a world that’s as hostile as it is haunting.

A Cinematic Masterpiece
The game features an original score composed by Lyndon Holland, BAFTA-winning composer and co-director of Variable State, whose music heightens the tension and immerses players in DEEPEST FEAR™’s chilling world. The narrative comes from the award-winning team behind Virginia and Last Stop, ensuring a compelling story that weaves cinematic storytelling with visceral gameplay.
