Solo developer Mana and publisher Kodansha Creators’ Lab have announced CaTHaRSiS The Last of Atelier, an atmospheric art adventure coming to PC via Steam in 2026. The game blends exploration, surreal environments, and themes of memory and humanity as players venture inside reimagined versions of famous paintings.

Players take on the role of a nameless being that awakens in an empty world with no understanding of humanity. As a mysterious voice guides the creature toward mankind’s greatest works of art, ten iconic paintings become gateways into alternate dimensions where memories preserved within each canvas can be experienced firsthand.

The journey takes players into vibrant 3D environments inspired by the works of renowned artists including Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, and Gustav Klimt. Each painting offers a distinct setting and style of exploration, with gameplay shifting between 3D environments, side-scrolling sequences, and peaceful boat rides.

Among the featured works are Van Gogh’s Café Terrace at Night, Monet’s Woman with a Parasol, and Klimt’s The Kiss. Rather than simply observing these masterpieces from a gallery wall, players can explore their worlds from within, experiencing the emotions and memories represented by each scene.

Two animal companions will also assist during the journey. A wolf represents instinct and wildness, using its speed to help explore each world, while an owl symbolizes wisdom and reason and allows players to take to the skies. Together, the companions help the nameless protagonist uncover new perspectives within the paintings and gradually bring color, light, and beauty to its otherwise empty existence.

“One of the guiding principles for CaTHaRSiS was the ability to experience famous works in brilliant new ways,” said solo developer Mana. “Viewing them from within a reimagined interpretation of each scene, you’re able to immerse yourself in the atmosphere and memories embedded in each painting, which offers an experience you can’t get by simply walking through a gallery or museum.”

CaTHaRSiS The Last of Atelier is scheduled to launch on PC via Steam in 2026 and will support English and Japanese.
