Developer Snail Bite has released a free demo for GRINDWORM, its upcoming psychological horror game, on Steam. The demo gives players an early look at the game’s oppressive atmosphere and survival mechanics ahead of October’s Steam Next Fest.
In GRINDWORM, arriving late for a shift is only the beginning of your problems. After a collapse traps you underground and your fellow crew members go missing, your only hope is an aging mining machine. With the tunnels cut off and danger lurking in the darkness, survival depends on keeping your equipment running and continuing to dig. Workplace safety rules are no longer much help, and stopping could be a fatal mistake.

Survival Depends on Your Machine
GRINDWORM builds its horror around isolation, uncertainty, and the gradual erosion of reality. Rather than relying on detailed instructions or constant guidance, the game challenges players to learn how their mining machine works through observation and experimentation. Mistakes can have serious consequences, making every decision important as you navigate the underground tunnels.

Keeping the machine operational is essential to survival. Players must monitor oxygen levels, engine temperature, and other onboard systems while navigating the mine. Even if you manage to find the right path, running out of air or allowing critical equipment to fail could bring your journey to an end.

The machine also serves as the player’s primary interface. Instead of relying on floating objective markers or traditional health bars, players must interpret information from in-world gauges and onboard systems. This approach keeps the experience grounded in the machinery and reinforces the feeling of being trapped underground with limited resources.

The mine itself combines handcrafted locations with procedurally generated stretches of unexplored tunnels. These unpredictable sections introduce hazards and uncertainty, ensuring players cannot always know what awaits them around the next corner.

With its emphasis on machinery management, environmental awareness, and psychological horror, GRINDWORMchallenges players to keep digging even when the underground becomes increasingly dangerous.
