Meteorbyte Studios and Mint Gate Games have unveiled Toxic Frontier, a card-based survival strategy game combining roguelike mechanics, city-building and a retro-inspired aesthetic. The game was revealed during the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct 2026 and is coming to Steam.
Toxic Frontier takes place in a post-nuclear wasteland where players must guide a group of survivors as they attempt to reclaim the surface. Starting with a single tile on a hexagonal grid, players gradually expand their settlement by placing cards that can purify the surrounding landscape and create new opportunities for survival.
Each card interacts with the tiles around it, allowing players to discover increasingly complex combinations and powerful synergies. Choosing where to place cards becomes an important part of each run, with successful combinations helping players reach the required score for each level. Fail to reach the target before running out of cards, however, and the journey comes to an irradiated end.
Exploration introduces new tiles and cards that can react differently depending on the surrounding terrain and other cards already in play. Planning these interactions carefully can create increasingly effective combinations as players attempt to push their settlement deeper into the wastes.
The road to rebuilding civilization takes survivors across three distinct biomes, each featuring its own story elements, quests and gameplay mechanics. Every environment also introduces new hazards capable of putting an end to the expedition.
The game’s story follows a group of nuclear nomads emerging from generations of underground isolation. With stories of sunlight, grass and clean air having become little more than legends, the survivors must decide what kind of future they want to build on the surface.
Players can attempt to create a thriving settlement from the wasteland or embrace the corrupting power of the Toxic Frontier itself.
Toxic Frontier features more than 40 unique cards to unlock and collect, increasingly complex tile interactions, new challenges across each biome, four game modes and two different story endings. The game will also feature full Steam Deck support.
