Developer Codenightly has officially locked in the release date for its upcoming Metroidvania, Sunken Sky. The hand-crafted, anime-inspired adventure arrives on PC via Steam on April 9, with review codes currently available ahead of launch.

Drawing inspiration from genre standouts like Ori and the Blind Forest and Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight, Sunken Sky aims to strike a balance between accessibility and depth. It’s designed as a welcoming entry point for newcomers to the Metroidvania formula, while still delivering the sweeping, character-driven storytelling JRPG fans crave.

Three Heroines, One Expansive Journey
Players will step into the roles of three unlikely heroines, each bringing distinct abilities and personal story arcs to the adventure. Swapping between characters isn’t just a gimmick — it’s key to uncovering hidden items, overcoming environmental challenges, and standing toe-to-toe with the world’s most dangerous threats.

As the trio journeys across the kingdom, they’ll battle towering monstrosities, forge bonds with the people they meet, and grow stronger together in a narrative centered on resilience and hope.

Exploration, Combat, and a Touch of Whimsy
In true Metroidvania fashion, Sunken Sky features a sprawling interconnected map that gradually unfolds as new abilities are unlocked. From treacherous mountain peaks to enchanted forests, each region is packed with secrets waiting to be discovered.
But the adventure doesn’t stop at combat and exploration. The game also weaves in lighter, genre-blending moments through magical minigames — including cooking challenges and even aerial flight sequences — offering a refreshing change of pace between battles.

Hand-Drawn Beauty
Every scene in Sunken Sky is brought to life with detailed, hand-drawn artwork inspired by anime aesthetics. The vibrant visual style gives the world a distinct personality, elevating both its environments and its colorful cast of characters.

Sunken Sky launches April 9 on PC via Steam for $15.99. A playable demo is available now for those who want to experience the opening moments before release.
