A murder mystery where the victim hires you to crack the case? That’s the hook behind The Posthumous Investigation, an award-winning indie noir thriller from Mother Gaia Studio and publisher CriticalLeap, launching on PC via Steam on March 31, 2026, with a Nintendo Switch version currently in development.
Set in a stylized 1937 Rio de Janeiro, the game opens with a twist: your client, Brás Cubas, is already dead. His restless spirit is trapped in a purgatorial time loop, and the only way to free him is to uncover the truth behind his murder. Death, it seems, is just the beginning of the investigation.

Drawing inspiration from the deduction-driven design of Return of the Obra Dinn and the shadowy tone of classic film noir, the game puts logic front and center. Players must track the movements of 14 suspects, expose contradictions in their alibis, and reconstruct the timeline of the perfect crime—all before the day resets and the loop begins again.

Case Highlights
-
The Victim Is Your Client: Investigate a murder with guidance from the ghost who suffered it.
-
Master the Time Loop: You have one day to solve the case, but endless opportunities to refine your approach. Learn routines, follow suspects, and unlock new dialogue using knowledge gained from previous runs.
-
A Literary-Inspired World: Influenced by the sharp satire of Machado de Assis, often dubbed the “Brazilian Shakespeare,” the narrative leans into wit and moral ambiguity where no character is entirely blameless.
-
True Detective Work: No hand-holding here. Use the in-game Thinking Board to connect clues, map timelines, and identify the killer through pure deduction.

“We wanted to create a detective game where the setting itself is a puzzle,” said Bruno Toledo, Game Director at Mother Gaia Studio. “By combining the time-loop mechanic with the rich, satirical world of Machado de Assis, we’ve built a mystery that challenges players to think like a true investigator—where every failed loop is just another clue.”

Curious sleuths don’t have to wait to get a taste of the mystery. A browser-based demo is available now, letting players step into the noir atmosphere instantly without a download.

The Posthumous Investigation arrives on Steam March 31, 2026. If you enjoy cerebral mysteries and atmospheric storytelling, this is one case you may want to add to your wishlist.
