Safe In Our World, the games industry mental health charity, has unveiled the Mental Health Star Accreditation—a first-of-its-kind initiative designed to recognize and support studios that prioritize mental wellbeing in the workplace.

Setting a New Standard for Workplace Wellbeing

Developed by experts at the intersection of games and mental health, the accreditation aims to foster psychologically safer working environments across the industry. The process begins with a company-wide audit that examines policies, practices, workplace culture, and team sentiment. From there, Safe In Our World issues a detailed report highlighting strengths and offering recommendations for improvement.

Three Levels of Recognition

Studios that meet the accreditation requirements will earn one of three tiers of recognition, valid for three years and supported with annual check-ins:

  • Dedicated

  • Accomplished

  • Outstanding

Accredited companies will also receive a media kit and digital assets to showcase their commitment on websites and social media.

For those that don’t achieve accreditation immediately, Safe In Our World provides a comprehensive improvement plan with resources and practical advice, encouraging companies to reapply whenever ready.

A Program for Everyone

“This kind of accreditation has been long overdue for the unique trials and challenges of the games industry,” said Erla Arnadottir, Safe In Our World trustee and Head of Business Development at LootLocker. “You can really tell that Safe In Our World has developed this with all different kinds of companies and their structures in mind.”

Whether you’re a two-person indie team or a AAA powerhouse, the Mental Health Star Accreditation is designed to scale with your needs. Safe In Our World emphasizes that it’s never too early—or too late—to start building a healthier studio culture.

Changing the Future of the Industry

As the first mental health accreditation built specifically for games, the Mental Health Star Programme represents an important step toward reshaping how studios approach employee wellbeing. Safe In Our World hopes the initiative will become a benchmark of excellence for companies across the industry.
