The survival sandbox just got a lot more savage. Under a Rock, the colorful-yet-deadly multiplayer open-world survival game from Nordic Trolls, has revealed its first official look at combat gameplay — and it’s far from your typical swing-and-win system.

Celebrating over 300,000 Steam wishlists, the team has dropped a new gameplay update video and a hefty slice of extended b-roll footage, offering fans an early peek at the intense, skill-based combat that’s been cooking behind the scenes. This reveal follows a recent community poll, where fans voted for what they wanted to see next — and now, they’re getting what they asked for.

    Primitive Weapons, Brutal Encounters

In Under a Rock, survival means outsmarting the dangers of an untamed world filled with prehistoric threats. The newly unveiled combat system puts players up against Neanderthals, a fierce enemy faction that fiercely defends their territory. Think fast — you’ll need perfectly timed dodges, shield blocks, and counterattacks to survive.

Combat here is meaty and methodical, with handcrafted weapons like spears, clubs, axes, and bows all offering different feels and playstyles. Thanks to fluid enemy animations and varied attack patterns, no two fights feel the same. It’s less about button-mashing and more about reading your foe and responding with precision.

    A Living, Breathing Survival Sandbox

Set in a procedurally generated world shaped by an alternate evolutionary path, Under a Rock doesn’t just stop at combat. Players will also build bases, tame and ride bizarre creatures, cook, craft, and survive across varied biomes — all while dealing with diseases, curses, and other wild environmental twists.

Whether you’re going solo or teaming up with up to 10 players in co-op, exploration is at the heart of the experience. The world is vibrant, unpredictable, and occasionally deadly — just how we like it.

    • Procedural World Generation – No two playthroughs are the same. Expect surprises behind every rock, tree, or riverbend.

    • Creature Taming & Survival Systems – Befriend beasts, cook meals, and navigate threats both cute and deadly.

    • Deep Character Customization – Design your own look using a diverse and accessible character creator.

    • 10-Player Co-Op – Explore, fight, and build with friends in a shared survival experience.

Under a Rock is currently in development for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5, and is available to wishlist now on Steam and the Epic Games Store. With more reveals on the way — guided by the community’s own votes — now’s a perfect time to get in early and see what’s lurking just under the surface.

Watch the new combat trailer and get ready to test your reflexes — because in this world, survival means mastering the rhythm of the wild.
