The King Is Watching Launches on PC — A Roguelite Where Slacking Off Is Treason

A Wholesome Companion Game

Ever wish you could rule a kingdom just by glaring at it? Well, now you can. The King is Watching, a wildly inventive roguelite kingdom builder from developer Hypnohead and publisher tinyBuild, is out now on PC via Steam — and it’s already making waves with over 200k wishlists, 300k demo downloads, and a 96% Steam rating to back it up.

In this offbeat royal sim, you play as a hands-off (but very watchful) king who manages his empire with nothing but pure intimidation. Peasants will only work when your gaze is upon them — stare at a wheat field and they’ll farm. Look away, and they’ll instantly slack off. You’re not micromanaging; you’re micro-staring.

But keeping your eyes on the prize is harder than it sounds, especially when goblin warlords, dragons, necromancers, and other nasties start trying to burn down your settlement. The King is Watching turns passive management into an intense balancing act as you juggle production, defense, and peasant motivation in real-time.

Rule with Vision, Literally

You’ll unlock seven unique monarchs over the course of your reign, each with different playstyles:

  • King Leo the Wise: A builder-focused ruler who hands out blueprints like candy.

  • King Spellus: A spellcasting king with passive crystal income and a knack for arcane destruction.

  • King Alucard: Not dead, just undead — summons fallen troops back to the battlefield as skeletal soldiers.

The roguelite design means no two runs are the same, with randomized spells, artifacts, and blueprints forcing you to think fast and adapt. Tougher “Threat Levels” unlock more powerful enemies with new abilities — so if you want to flex those royal strategy muscles, there’s plenty of challenge waiting.
