Back to the Dawn, the pixel-art prison survival RPG that’s earned critical acclaim and a 92% positive rating on Steam, is officially launching on Xbox Series X|S on July 18—and it’s packing new content, console-ready controls, and a launch discount.

Developed by Metal Head Games and published by Spiral Up Games, Back to the Dawn blends deep roleplaying mechanics, branching storylines, and old-school pixel visuals into a gritty prison escape adventure where every decision matters.

Framed. Locked Up. Time’s Running Out.

You play as Thomas the Fox, an investigative journalist who uncovers too much and pays the price—framed for crimes he didn’t commit and thrown into the walls of Boulderton Prison. Inside, it’s not just about survival. You’ll need to build alliances, uncover a deeper conspiracy, and plan your escape with precision… or risk becoming just another name in the prison log.

From underground dealings and stealthy side jobs to full-blown riots and cell block politics, Back to the Dawn throws you into a living, reactive prison environment that evolves with every choice you make.

New Content: The Black Panther Arc

Releasing alongside the game’s full 1.0 PC version, the Xbox launch includes the Black Panther Arc—a brand-new storyline centered around Bob the Panther, an undercover cop with a secretive past. Expect new characters, morally grey decisions, and expanded areas to explore inside and beyond the prison walls.

    • Console-Optimized Controls – Fully tuned for Xbox Series X|S for smooth gameplay

    • Deep Roleplaying Mechanics – Skill trees, stealth, bribery, combat, and more

    • Branching Narrative – Every action can change your fate and alter who you trust

    • Pixel-Art Style with Grit – Retro visuals meet a dark, conspiracy-fueled story

    • New Black Panther Arc – Dive into fresh quests, new characters, and secret agendas

    Launch Price & Discount

Back to the Dawn will retail for $19.99 USD, but Xbox players can grab it for $16.99 during launch week thanks to a 15% discount.

If you missed it on PC, now’s the perfect time to jump into one of the year’s most unique RPGs. Whether you’re negotiating with a gang, sneaking through restricted areas, or piecing together clues on a conspiracy that reaches far beyond the prison gates, Back to the Dawn delivers a tightly woven mix of tension, choice, and pixel-perfect style.
