GAMM – Game Museum: A New Hub for Video Game Culture Opens in Rome
The cultural heart of Rome just got a thrilling new addition for gamers and history buffs alike. GAMM – Game Museum has officially opened its doors in the iconic Piazza della Repubblica, aiming to celebrate video games as both an art form and a cultural medium. This interactive museum takes visitors on a journey through the evolution of gaming, combining history, technology, and the joy of gameplay in an innovative and immersive way.
A Modern Space for Gaming Heritage
Marco Accordi Rickards, Director of GAMM, describes the museum as a “wonderful celebration of video game culture.” He adds, “GAMM offers a journey of preservation, both digitally and physically, in a modern space. Situated in the heart of Rome, the museum will also serve as a venue for cultural events and entertainment. We’re excited to welcome visitors from around the globe and share the rich history of video games.”
GAMM builds on the success of Vigamus – The Video Game Museum of Rome, which has attracted over two million visitors since its inception in 2012. The new museum spans an impressive 700 square meters over two levels, divided into three thematic areas. Open seven days a week, GAMM blends state-of-the-art digital exhibits with rare and valuable artifacts, positioning video games as a unique cultural and artistic medium.
Explore the Three Thematic Areas
The museum offers three interconnected exhibition spaces, each providing a distinct perspective on gaming history and design:
- GAMMDOME: This immersive area combines digital interactive stations with physical displays of iconic gaming artifacts. The “4E Concept” – Experience, Exhibition, Education, and Entertainment – guides visitors through a fusion of expert contributions, rare objects, consoles, and donations that trace the evolution of video games.
- PARC (Path of Arcadia): Dedicated to the golden age of arcade gaming, this section dives into the late ‘70s through the ‘80s, with select highlights from the early ’90s. Relive the glory days of coin-op classics in a nostalgic setting.
- HIP (Historical Playground): Located on the museum’s second level, this space focuses on gameplay and the underlying structure of video games. Visitors can explore the history of game design, interaction mechanisms, and the evolution of technology through hands-on experiences.
For Gamers, Families, and Beyond
GAMM is designed to appeal to a wide audience, including gaming enthusiasts, families, tourists, schools, academies, and industry professionals. Whether you’re a veteran gamer or a curious newcomer, there’s something here for everyone to enjoy and learn from.
