Fall anime is here! Here is the top ten anime for this fall season. I can already see the cosplays coming…

Not mentioned are anime with second seasons. Those are usually an obvious “must watch” because we aren’t always blessed with multiple seasons.

 

1. Trickster

Genre: Mystery

Member of the Boy’s Detective Team, Kensuke Hanasaki meets a troubled and suicidal boy named Yoshio Kobayashi. Kobayashi seems to be immortal with an invisible sphere of defense surrounding him. This prevents him from getting close to others and also his own death. Hanasaki takes him in and requests his participation in the detective team. A criminal is introduced named “Fiend with Twenty Faces” and the mystery starts.

 

 

 

2. Yuri!!! On Ice

Genre: Sports, Comedy

Yuri Katsuki tragically failed at the Gran Prix Finale ice skating competition, and his reputation suffered greatly in Japan. He returns home with thoughts of retirement and defeat. With the continued support of his family, Yuri continues to skate. After a video of Yuri goes viral, world champion Viktor Nikiforov appears to offer his training to him and a young Russian figure skater, Yuri Plisetsky. The story follows the three and their relationship and struggle to the Gran Prix series.

 

 

 

3. Nanbaka

Genre: Comedy, Action, Drama

This hilarious anime surrounds four convicts who are famous for escaping every prison they’ve ever been held in. Together they are unstoppable…until they are placed in Nanba, a prison where no one has ever successfully escaped from.

 

 

 

 

 

4. Kiss Him, Not Me

Genre: Comedy, Romance, Shoujo, Harem

High school student Kae Serinuma is a BL obsessed and passionate fujoshi.  After the death of her favorite anime character, Kae becomes closeted and depressed and loses a profound amount of weight. She arrives back to school, almost unrecognizable and attracts many of her good-looking classmates. When she sees these boys getting along with each other, she indulges in her wild fantasies.

 

 

 

5. Cheating Craft

Genre: Action, Comedy

This short film series runs about 12 minutes per episode. It’s about a world where your future relies completely on your education and test scores. If you pass the exams, you will live a successful life. Parents spend ridiculous amounts of money for their children to pass…and some come up with cheating techniques that are beyond anything you could ever imagine. The exam halls become battlefields and are filled with unimaginable chaos.

 

6. Occultic; Nine

Genre: Mystery, Sci-fi

Yuuta Gamon, a 17-year-old high school student, runs an occult summary blog “Choujou Kagaku Kiriri Basara.” Strange events bring together nine individuals which lead to a larger event that may alter the world. The story seems very intricate with surprises around every corner.

 

7. March Comes in like a Lion

Genre: Drama, Game, Slice of Life

This story follows 17-year-old Rei Kiriyama, who is a professional Shogi player. He lives alone and struggles interacting with classmates and his adoptive family.  He befriends three sisters that welcome Rei as one of their own and treat him with affection that he hasn’t quite felt before. This anime shows Rei’s growth as a person through his accomplishments and failures.

 

 

 

8. Bloodivores

Genre: Action, Supernatural

Many years ago, insomnia struck the population keeping them awake for multiple days. The victims of this incident went insane and a cure was made to revive their previous mental states. The medicine turned these victims into vampires, which led to a war between the humans and the new species of vampires. A half-human, half-vampire named Mi Liu nicknamed “The Child of Hope,” was introduced to society to bring the two species together. Mi Liu is arrested after robbing a bank and transferred into a special prison filled with vampires and monsters. As he tries to escape, questions and secrets emerge.

 

9. Flip Flappers

Genre: Adventure, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Comedy

This colorful anime follows two young girls, Cocona, a diligent student, and Papika, an energetic girl from the Flip Flap organization.  The girls together open the door to a different dimension called “Pure Illusion.” Together they search for a crystal that is said to grant any wish. On their way to find this crystal, they find themselves immersed into strange lands and odd circumstances.

 

 

 

 

10. Drifters

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Historical

In a dark battle, Shimazu Toyohisa mortally wounds his enemy but in the process is critically wounded. In his dying moments, he is then suddenly transported into a room filled with doors and a lone man at a desk. This man sends him to a door where he is transported into another world. Toyohisa finds other infamous deceased warriors like him, that together create the group called the “Drifters.”

 

 

 

Honorable Mention: Gakuen Handsome.
