Back in 2013, Techland dropped a viral hit celebrating “100 Years of Zombie Evolution,” a clever look at how the undead shuffled, groaned, and evolved through pop culture history. Now, a decade later, they’re back with a follow-up: “110 Years of Zombies in Pop Culture”, arriving just in time to hype the launch of Dying Light: The Beast on September 19, 2025.

This new video once again enlists skilled makeup artists and actors to bring the dead to life—well, un-life—showcasing how zombies have been portrayed across film, television, and video games. From the eerie voodoo-inspired undead of the early 20th century to the flesh-hungry hordes made famous in modern cinema, all the way to today’s more creative and unusual takes, the video is both a tribute and a time capsule of our enduring fascination with zombies.

Techland, of course, has its own stake in zombie pop culture with the Dying Light series, and this retrospective is the perfect way to celebrate the genre while building hype for their next big release.

Now live on Steam, the demo lets players descend into a strange, isometric dungeon that turns American pop culture into a labyrinth of nostalgia, mystery, and emotional discovery.

Welcome to the Weird Below

In UNDERGROUNDED, you play as Scott, a down-on-his-luck New Yorker whose marriage proposal goes spectacularly wrong. Distraught, he drops his engagement ring into a storm drain… and down it goes, falling deeper and deeper beneath the city.

But instead of finding a typical sewer system, Scott discovers a sprawling underground world where the ghosts of America’s past come to life — quite literally. From 80s movie theaters to space stations, speakeasies, and Old West shootouts, every floor of this bizarre dungeon is a new slice of time to explore.

And yes, cowboys do exist under Manhattan in this world.

Gameplay: Puzzle-Solving, Retro Boss Fights, and Lost Souls

Each themed floor of the dungeon is packed with brain-teasing puzzles and hidden stories. You’ll solve mysteries, meet strange characters who’ve all lost something important, and even go toe-to-toe with massive bosses. But instead of swords or magic, your weapons are retro arcade machines, which you’ll need to master if you want to survive and move on.

You won’t be alone though — Scott is joined by a cheerful, talkative canary who’s always ready with a hint or a morale boost.
