Heavy Cav Studios has revealed Historia: Roma Aeterna, an upcoming indie historical narrative adventure that puts players in the role of Julius Caesar during one of the most turbulent periods in Roman history. Developed with input from a credentialed historian and gaming industry veterans, the game explores Caesar’s Civil War from 49–45 BC, giving players the opportunity to shape events in the gaps left by the historical record.

Rather than simply retelling Caesar’s well-known exploits, Historia: Roma Aeterna allows players to decide what kind of leader he becomes. Players will navigate political relationships, weigh the advice of allies, negotiate with factions, challenge rival senators, and make decisions that can influence both personal relationships and the future of the Roman Republic.

The game’s narrative unfolds through beautifully illustrated story encounters, with choices carrying consequences throughout the campaign. Where history provides a definitive answer, Historia: Roma Aeterna aims to remain grounded in the historical record. Where historians are left with uncertainty, however, players can determine what happens next.

Combat takes a different approach, combining strategic planning with simultaneous-turn battles. Players first position their forces and issue commands from a war table before watching those orders play out on a living battlefield. Successful tactics can turn the tide of a battle, while poor decisions can quickly lead to disaster, making every command an important part of Caesar’s campaign.

Heavy Cav Studios is also aiming to make the strategy experience approachable without sacrificing the depth expected from the genre. The focus is on giving players an intuitive way to engage with the political, personal, and military challenges surrounding Caesar without overwhelming them with unnecessary complexity.

Set against the backdrop of Caesar’s Civil War, Historia: Roma Aeterna explores the Crisis of the Roman Republic and the conflicts that spread across the Mediterranean. The fate of the Republic is ultimately placed in the player’s hands, with the decisions they make capable of creating a version of history that diverges from what we know today while remaining grounded in what could have plausibly happened.

Players will also have to decide what kind of Caesar they want to become. Mercy, ruthlessness, ambition, diplomacy, and military strategy can all shape the campaign, with every decision contributing to the legacy Caesar leaves behind.
