Originally gaining attention through a prototype on Itch.io that amassed more than 155,000 downloads and millions of views across social media platforms, Dressmaker has continued to build momentum with more than 60,000 wishlists on Steam.

Developed by Free Lives under its Cozy Lives label, Dressmaker offers a hands-on approach to garment creation. Players begin by selecting fabrics, arranging and cutting patterns, and carefully sewing pieces together using a functioning sewing machine system. Every step of the dressmaking process is interactive, creating a detailed simulation that celebrates craftsmanship and creativity.

The game features a wide variety of materials, including cotton, linen, wool, silk, and velvet, allowing players to experiment with different styles and designs. A sketchbook system lets aspiring fashion designers create concepts, add color, and incorporate fabric samples before bringing their ideas to life.

Once a design is complete, players can fulfill customer requests from townsfolk, earning reputation and currency while building their tailoring business. Those who prefer to create freely can design original outfits and display them in shop windows for sale. Throughout the year, special events and seasonal occasions provide additional opportunities to showcase unique creations.

The story behind Dressmaker is just as inspiring as the game itself. The project was created by partners Jonathan Hau-Yoon, known for work on Fortnite and Terra Nil, and Sabrina Becker, an artist and dressmaking enthusiast with a passion for costume and fashion history.

Becker had originally hoped to pursue costume design professionally, but Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a connective tissue disorder, forced her to reconsider that path. Wanting to help Sabrina continue expressing her creativity through fashion, Jonathan helped bring the idea to life through game development, combining their shared interests into an interactive experience.

What started as a side project quickly exceeded expectations. After early concepts generated significant online interest, Hau-Yoon pitched the idea to Free Lives, the South African studio known for action-heavy titles such as Broforce, GORN, and Anger Foot. Despite the studio’s history of creating more chaotic experiences, the overwhelming response to Dressmaker convinced the team to move forward.

A small development group, including Ruan Rothmann, Sara Laubscher, and composer Meydän, produced a prototype in just three weeks. The demo rapidly gained traction, surpassing 100,000 downloads and inspiring players worldwide to share their handmade designs.

Today, Dressmaker is being developed by a dedicated team at Free Lives, with music by Meydän and writing from Kerstin Hall. As development continues, the game is shaping up to be a standout entry in the growing cozy gaming genre, offering a relaxing and creative experience centered around fashion, craftsmanship, and self-expression.
